The National Gain was presented to the Estates in 1765, and it contained many themes similar to Smith?s 1776 masterpiece. There were, however, important differences as well. First, Chydenius? ideas were less clearly articulated as a cohesive theory; in contrast, he presented an interesting mix of rather abstract principles and certain clear policy recommendations.

Eleven years before Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations, Anders Chydenius (1729-1803) wrote this charming essay that anticipated many of Smith’s themes. His clear exposition of the new economic philosophy is testimony to writing that garnered praise even from his opponents. It is unfortunate that his ideas were not applied in his lifetime.

Known as the Adam Smith of the North, Anders Chydenius laid out his economic prescription for mercantilist [Sweden-Finland] in The National Gain in 1765, suggesting a concept of spontaneous order eleven years before Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations: “Every individual spontaneously tries to find the place and the trade in which he can best increase Nationa Anders Chydenius, The National Gain (1765) The Finnish clergyman Anders Chydenius (1729–1803) is one of the most noteworthy politicians in the Swedish realm during the eighteenth century. He is most of all remembered as an outspoken, and sometimes even fierce, defender of freedom in all areas of life. The most famous of these articles, which caused a great stir, was The National Gain. Chydenius’ major accomplishments at the Diet included stricter control of the national economy and enactment of the Freedom of the Press Act, which he considered to be one of his greatest achievements. The radical Anders Chydenius var son till kaplanen i Sotkamo, senare kyrkoherden i Gamlakarleby Jakob Chydenius och Hedvig Hornæus. Brodern Samuel (1727–1757) var en känd naturforskare och uppfinnare. Efter studier vid Kungliga Akademien i Åbo och Uppsala universitet (där Pehr Kalm var en av hans lärare) blev Chydenius filosofie kandidat i Åbo 1753 och magister 1754.
